Company History
Action Sports Apparel started out as Action Shirt and Lettering in the sixties. Action and Shirt and Lettering was purchased by Ace Mitchell’s Bowler’s Mart in 1976. In 1980 the name Action Shirt and Lettering was changed to Micnan Inc., DBA Ace Mitchell’s Bowler’s Mart and Action Sports Apparel. Then in the fall of ’92 Micnan had a fire and Tom Gough purchased the Action Sports Apparel division of Micnan Inc that was not seriously damaged by the fire.
Action Sports Apparel experienced tremendous growth up through the late nineties and even through 2000. In 2001 after the 9-11 attacks, the apparel decoration industry for Action Sports Apparel slowed down to a crawl for nearly a year. The business was built back up over the following five years. Carolyn Gill took over the management of the company in 2007 and is currently the General Manager of Action Sports Apparel.
In the fall of 2008, Jon Sommer began negotiations with Tom Gough to purchase the assets of the business. A deal was struck at the end of the 2008 calendar year, and Jon Sommer started Custom Clothing Enterprises LLC with the DBA name Action Sports Apparel in January of 2009.

Action Sports Apparel has been serving greater Akron’s custom apparel needs for over 40 years, and before purchasing the company, I was one of those customers for nearly 5 years. I had a great relationship with the people who cared for my apparel needs, and I trusted the quality, lead-time, and competitive pricing I needed for both, my large jobs and small jobs.
As the company’s new owner, I’ve gotten to see the organization from the inside out, and it’s very exciting. We’ve been changing a lot. We have a long way to go…but we’re moving forward and it’s fun.
We’re pursuing new lines of business. We’re doing research on, you, our customer. We’re restructuring our operations and technology to serve you more efficiently—which helps lower your costs. We’ve created this new website so that you can know us more. Our logo is brand new. Our company “heart” is revived…and we’re moving forward.
